Made out of natural raw materials our products stand for lasting value, longevity, quality of living and innovative building. Their quality has been extensively tested in terms of eco-friendliness and has earned us plenty of declarations and certifications, underpinning our efforts.

Principles, processes and instruments of our product management

A central principle of product development at Wienerberger is the creation of lasting value for our customers by supplying them with durable and innovative building materials. We view sustainability as a function of a product’s service life as well as of its impact on the environment during production, transport, installation, use, and disposal.
Wienerberger ceramic products are an integral part of many sustainable building concepts. They guarantee a high quality of life and make an active contribution to the fight against climate change and fulfil the demands of increasing urbanization.

Longevity is an important parameter when determining how sustainable a construction material actually is. Over the entire lifetime, the impact on the environment stemming from the production process is very low. Our products have a very long service life; there are numerous examples of buildings constructed with clay materials which have easily lasted for over 150 years. The longer the service life, the smaller is the impact of the material on the environment.

Research and development

Research and development play a key role in our company. At Wienerberger, R&D is managed centrally, but most of the results achieved are implemented locally. We operate five research centers all over Europe, each of them specializing in a different product group.  All research is done with sustainability in mind.  The FEM (Finite Element Method) is used in order to optimize production costs, especially in the roof sector.

Environmental product declarations and certifications

For many years, Wienerberger has been working intensively on the voluntary preparation of eco-balances and environmental product declarations (EPDs) for its entire product range. Country-specific and local certificates are supported. Regular re-certification ensures continuous development in all essential aspects.

Wienerberger products have been awarded several eco- and sustainability labels. Some examples:
Germany: The eco-institut is one of the leading providers of product and emissions testing and quality assurance in Germany, focussing on current legal national and international requirements.
E.g. the German Poroton clay blocks were awarded the “eco-Institut-Label”
Belgium: The Natureplus label issued by VIBE is a label for sustainable building and accommodation products that promotes eco-friendly homes and workplaces.
Netherlands: The DUBOkeur label, issued by NIBE in the Netherlands certifies that a product (including its raw materials) was manufactured referring to the best environmental practice.
United Kingdom : Certification in accordance with the BES 6001 standard shows that the construction product manufacturer ensures and proves that its products have been made with constituent and responsibly sourced materials.
The French EXCELL Zone Verte® label ensures that even the smallest emissions of materials will not have any negative impact on the indoor air quality. Wienerberger France got the highest level for it´s products – Gold status.

Creating products with respect to the wildlife

In many countries, bird and bat nesting boxes made of clay are included in our product range. They can be discretely integrated into housing developments, a subtle way of promoting biodiversity within the urban and suburban landscape.
