Clay blocks guarantee a high quality of living, a healthy indoor climate and create a feel good atmosphere. Furthermore they are natural and sustainable, thus make an active contribution to the fight against climate change.

Why Wienerberger clay blocks are good for you and the environment

Clay building materials are able to regulate moisture in a natural way. That way they contribute to healthy and comfortable indoor air and to the wellbeing of the inhabitants. Furthermore houses built with clay blocks don’t emit of any pollutants or allergens to the indoor air. Studies proof that solid brick houses generate markedly less critical emissions than houses using lightweight timber construction methods. Emission values for VOC (volatile organic compounds), which are sometimes held responsible for the increasing number of allergies, as well as formaldehyde are not detectable in clay building materials, as shown in the graph below.

Clay block walls have excellent sound insulation properties. The more massive the wall, the better the reduction of noise from both outside and inside the house. In addition Wienerberger offers especially sound insulating clay blocks to be used for example between apartments.

Owing to the combination of the clay block shape and the consistency of clay, the blocks can do what other building materials can’t: namely insulate against heat and store heat. They thus prevent rapid cooling down in winter and protect against overheating in summer. And they do so without additional thermal insulation on the façade or air-conditioning and ventilation systems. That way they contribute to a significant reduction of the energy demand for heating or cooling.

All clay building materials are particularly green and sustainable. They consist of natural raw materials which are extracted very carefully and are produced close to the market, which keeps the transportation distances very short. Furthermore, due to their very long life service, the material's initial impact on the environment is greatly minimized. Clay products have a lower global warming potential than other products. Ceramic products produced in EU28 generate lower Greenhouse Gases emissions during the production phase than concrete-based products sold on the EU market. Values for ceramic products range between 46 and 75kg CO2/m3 product whereas values for concrete and AAC products range between 85 and 120kg CO2/m3

Clay blocks are a natural building material because their main components- clay and water- directly come from nature. Clay building materials don't have to be treated with chemicals to achieve fire- or moisture protection. To improve product quality only additives are used which are extensively tested according to their eco-friendliness. Therefore clay blocks are absolutely nontoxic and allergen-free and thus perfectly compatible with people and nature.
