Celebrating 40 issues of brick architecture

For our anniversary edition architectum #40, we’re taking you on a tour of 15 incredible brick architecture projects from across 14 countries.

A vibrant kindergarten in the Czech Republic fuels creativity in our youngest ones, while an artist’s legacy is coming back to life in a striking art museum in London. Whether you picture taking a stroll over a stunning brick carpet in Norway or enjoying the view at a bold apartment complex in Belgrade – each project in this issue will draw you in and leave you inspired and in awe.

Recreation of brick history

A residential neighbourhood near Amsterdam seamlessly blends traditional brickwork architecture with modern living standards.

“The Netherlands boasts a rich tradition in brickwork, enabling intricate details and a variety of colour shades. We have a profound appreciation for working with brick, which constitutes about 90% of our daily projects. In this particular endeavour, the choice of material was driven by the desire to recreate the turn-of-the-century appearance.”, explain the architects.

Children in their own universe

The “Galaxie” nursery school in Varnsdorf, Czech Republic, creates a colorful and safe space where children can thrive through play and learning.

The thoughtful use of acoustic bricks fosters a serene and quality environment, ensuring comfort for everyone within its walls. The construction began with an innovative elliptical floor plan. Upon completion, an open atrium was incorporated within the circular structure, seamlessly integrating the garden into the interior and enhancing the nursery’s serene atmosphere.

Healing space for mental wellness

With its inviting brick exteriors, gentle curves, and a spacious courtyard, the new mental health hospital in Tampere, Finland, cultivates a tranquil and nurturing atmosphere that supports healing and comfort for everyone who enters.

This thoughtfully designed space reflects a profound commitment to mental well-being, prioritizing a human-centered approach that caters to the unique needs of patients and staff alike. By fostering connections between individuals and their surroundings, the architecture encourages a sense of community and belonging, making it an ideal environment for recovery and growth.

Without compromises

The owners had their private harbour built at the shore of a high-quality rainwater lake not far from the city of Groningen in the northern part of The Netherlands.

However, the home is also situated near the Groningen Field, a natural gas site responsible for numerous earthquakes in recent years. As a result, the design had to appease not only on an aesthetic level but also to withstand earthquakes. As an energy-efficient addition, the photovoltaic GSE IN-ROOF SYSTEM was integrated into the ridge line, creating an elegant, uniform appearance, and keeping the house very low in energy usage.

Multiple houses, one home

Through this innovative project, architect Oliver Spiekermann has created a portal connecting the past and the future.

Nestled in Beelen, Germany, the “House made of Houses” stands as a distinctive structure that harmoniously complements the historic Church Square right next to it. The choice for the façade fell on the Cassia Red, from the Belgian wienerberger plant in Kortemark. “As with the quarry stone of the historic church, no two stones are the same here. That’s exactly the individuality we were looking for and found at wienerberger,” explained Oliver Spiekermann.
