Cities are growing - worldwide. Urban planning, urban architecture as well as infrastructure are facing major challenges. One of these cities is Vienna, since it is amongst Europes fastest growing cities.
Wienerberger has a long tradition in Vienna, since it was founded here. The company took a significant part in the construction of the famous Ringstrasse in Vienna. Not only the MAK (Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art) and the Vienna Stock Exchange were built with Wienerberger products, also the Heinrichshof (named after Heinrich Drasche, the founder of Wienerberger) opposite the Opera House, which was destroyed during World War II.
This is why Wienerberger also celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Ringstrasse as a part of its history. In the event series “Wiener Ringstrassen Symposien 2015”, the current challenges in urban planning, urban architecture and infrastructure were discussed with experts and decision makers from politics and business.
A high-profile panel of experts spoke on November 26, 2015 about their visions for the livable city of the future under the theme “City of the Future: Architecture as urban designer”. To conclude our series of symposia, Pedro Gadanho, Curator of Contemporary Architecture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, held an interesting keynote about “Out of the Present: Future Practices of Urban Design”. In his speech, he explained what European cities can learn from international megacities and how the role of architecture as a designer of the city of the future has changed already.
In the concluding discussion, experts from Wienerberger exchanged their thoughts with Pedro Gadanho on the current challenges of urban planning, such as the energy and climate issues, the increasing demand for housing and the corresponding compression as well as maintaining the quality of life.
